BOCES instructor named “Teacher of the Year”

In April, Theresa (Terri) Dobbs, an adult cosmetology instructor for GST BOCES, will receive the Teacher of the Year award from the New York State Association for Continuing/Community Education (NYACCE) at its annual conference.

Debra Harrington, an adult training and development specialist at GST BOCES, nominated Dobbs for the award. Her nomination letter emphasized Dobbs’ extensive experience in the field of appearance enhancement and her dedication to her students’ success.

Dobbs graduated from beauty school in 1980 and spent the next 20 years increasing her skills and career responsibilities. She started as a stylist, worked her way up to salon manager, became a regional supervisor of 25 salons, and in 2001, became the owner of her own salon. In 2002, while still running her own business, she approached BOCES with a desire to teach in the adult cosmetology program. Now, Dobbs is the lead instructor and coordinates five other instructors in the Cosmetology and Nail Technology programs.

Dobbs’ dedication to her students is exceptional, Harrington said. “It would be an understatement to say that Terri gives more than 100 percent to the students and the program. She realizes that life happens and sometimes our students need to be able to make up program hours. Therefore, she comes up with creative ways to help them do so.”

Also, Dobbs takes students to various events on her own time throughout the academic year to help them enhance their skills, make up clinical hours and give back to the community. She takes them to hair shows, on factory tours and to nursing homes to offer free beauty services to the residents.

“Terri is helping her students become charitable and reflective human beings by demonstrating the value of giving back to the community,” Harrington wrote.
